The upcoming reboot of ‘Resident Evil’ marks a significant moment for director Zach Cregger, as it will be his inaugural venture into filmmaking with an established franchise. However, fans can rest assured that he will infuse his signature creativity, which he previously showcased in films like ‘Weapons’ and ‘Barbarian.’
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, actress Kali Reis, known for her role in “True Detective: Night Country,” shared her enthusiasm for this new adaptation. She described it as a remarkable continuation of exceptional filmmaking, emphasizing that this reboot represents Cregger’s unique take on the origin story behind the iconic series.
Reis enthusiastically stated, “For those who love Resident Evil, particularly the gaming community, his interpretation of the origin story is nothing short of extraordinary. I truly believe you will be amazed by his vision, innovative ideas, and the humorous yet chaotic journey he takes us on within this Resident Evil narrative. Expect to be pleasantly surprised!”
Cregger himself, who collaborated with Shay Hatten—known for co-writing ‘John Wick: Chapters 3 and 4’—has expressed his perspective on the project, noting, “I see Resident Evil as something original, and I think you will, too, once you experience it.” He further clarified that while he values the lore from the video games, he does not intend to strictly adhere to it; rather, he aims to craft a story that authentically reflects the immersive experience players have while engaging with the games.
This begs the question: Will Cregger be able to satisfy both his own fan base and the die-hard followers of Resident Evil? We will find out when the film hits theaters on September 18, distributed by Sony.
Joining the cast are talents such as Austin Abrams from ‘Weapons,’ Paul Walter Hauser from ‘Black Bird,’ Zach Cherry from ‘Severance,’ and Johnno Wilson from ‘Twisted Metal.’ The film is produced by a team that includes Robert Kulzer from Constantin Film, along with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment, and Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions. Executive producers include Oliver Berben of Constantin and Victor Hadida of Davis Films, with Nicole Brown, president of TriStar Pictures, overseeing the project for Sony.
