In a thrilling matchup that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the New York Knicks triumphed over the Denver Nuggets with a score of 134-127 after enduring not one, but two overtime periods. This marked their eighth consecutive win, a streak that has solidified their position in the league. Jalen Brunson was the standout player, delivering an impressive performance with 42 points, complemented by nine assists and eight rebounds.
Adding to the excitement, Karl-Anthony Towns contributed significantly with 24 points and 12 rebounds, despite facing adversity. He played with a bandage over his right eye after suffering a nasty cut from a head collision during the first quarter. Although he fouled out during the first overtime, Brunson took charge, scoring 10 crucial points in the second overtime to secure the victory for the Knicks.
Jamal Murray was a key player for the Nuggets, scoring 39 points, while his teammate Nikola Jokic recorded a remarkable triple-double—30 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists—marking his first since returning from a knee injury just last week. However, this loss marked Denver's third straight defeat, having previously lost to the conference-leading Oklahoma City and Detroit teams.
Interestingly, the Knicks had enjoyed a dominant winning streak leading up to this game, averaging a hefty margin of 24.7 points per game. Yet, Wednesday night’s contest proved to be intensely competitive, as neither team ever led by more than a single-digit margin. OG Anunoby also made valuable contributions with 20 points.
The challenges for the Nuggets didn’t stop there, as they lost starting forwards Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones to injuries during the game. Watson limped off with a right leg injury late in the fourth quarter, adding to their woes.
In a dramatic twist, it seemed the Knicks might have clinched victory in the first overtime when Murray missed a pivotal 3-point shot at the buzzer. However, a loose-ball foul called on Mikal Bridges against Christian Braun was reviewed and deemed to have occurred before time ran out. Braun calmly sank both free throws, tying the game at 119 with just 0.3 seconds remaining.
Brunson, undeterred, opened the second overtime by netting the first six points, showcasing his clutch scoring ability.
The incident involving Towns came early in the game when he collided heads with Jones while driving towards the basket. The collision resulted in a cut above his eye, which required treatment. After receiving a bandage, he returned briefly to the game, even making free throws in his now-blood-stained white jersey, before heading back to the locker room.
Looking ahead, the Nuggets will face the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, while the Knicks are set to visit Detroit on Friday.
