A thrilling waterski racing event in South Australia's Riverland has been called off, leaving organizers and participants disappointed. The event, organized by Riverland Water Ski Racing SA, was set to take place at Lake Bonney, with racers reaching speeds of up to 144 km/h. However, a last-minute hurdle emerged when Marine Safety SA presented a list of permit conditions that were deemed unfeasible to meet in such a short timeframe.
The organizers had been working towards obtaining an aquatic activity license, but the process was still underway when the event was canceled. The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) stated that they were reviewing the application and required further documentation to assess the risks involved. With strict guidelines in place, the department mandates that applications for such licenses be submitted at least four weeks before an event to ensure timely issuance.
But here's where it gets controversial: the event was promoted on Facebook in early December, yet the organizers only submitted their license application on January 16th, just two weeks before the scheduled date. This raises questions about the planning and communication between the organizers and the authorities.
And this is the part most people miss: the national body, Ski Racing Australia, is currently reviewing its risk management framework following the suspension of racing events in 2024. The review recommends a ban on all water ski racing on river courses and a permanent speed limit of 110 km/h for towing activities. These new guidelines are expected to impact future ski racing events, including those in the Riverland.
In the meantime, DIT staff will be present in the Riverland this weekend to ensure compliance and safety on Lake Bonney. Marine Safety Officers will monitor activities and enforce speed limits and other safety requirements.
So, what do you think? Is the cancellation of this event justified, given the late submission of permit requirements? Or should organizers be given more leeway to promote such thrilling events? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
