Manchester City has made a stunning move, splashing out a reported $34.7 million to secure Crystal Palace's star defender, Marc Guehi, leaving rivals in the dust!
Manchester City's aggressive pursuit of Guehi has culminated in a £20 million ($34.7 million AUD) deal, according to reports. Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that the deal is in its "final stages." This move comes as City grapples with a significant injury crisis in their central defense.
Arsenal was also reportedly interested in Guehi, but City appears to be the only club that was prepared to make a deal. Guehi, who almost joined Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September, is set to become City's second signing of the January transfer window, following winger Antoine Semenyo's acquisition from Bournemouth last week for approximately £65 million.
But here's where it gets controversial... Guehi, who captained Palace to FA Cup victory against City in May – the south London club's first major trophy – and has earned 26 England caps, was also reportedly targeted by other clubs, including Liverpool and Bayern Munich. These clubs, however, were thought to be planning a move at the end of the season when Guehi would have been a free agent.
"The deal with Marc is in the final stages," Glasner stated before Palace's Premier League match. "We can't confirm, but it is not done. The result is Marc doesn't play tomorrow for us." Glasner added, "When the players want to move on, a deal will happen. It looks like it has happened now." He also mentioned, "Everyone wanted Marc to stay forever... I wish him all the best for the rest of his career. He is still at the beginning of his great career. He is a fantastic guy."
City manager Pep Guardiola, when asked about the potential transfer, said he had "nothing to say" at his press conference. City is currently without senior centre-backs John Stones, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol due to injuries, while Nathan Ake has struggled with fitness issues. Guardiola, whose team is second in the Premier League, six points behind Arsenal, acknowledged the club is "in a difficult situation for not one game but a long, long period." He added, "Ruben will be back soon. Josko, no. John, hopefully we’ll see."
City is also competing for silverware in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. Glasner also announced that he would be leaving Palace when his contract expires at the end of the season.
