NASA's Artemis Moonshot Delayed by Unusually Cold Temperatures
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - NASA has postponed the upcoming Artemis mission, which will send astronauts to the moon, due to near-freezing temperatures at the launch site. The first Artemis moonshot with a crew is now scheduled for no earlier than February 8, a two-day delay from the original plan.
The space agency was set to conduct a crucial fueling test of the massive 322-foot (98-meter) moon rocket on Saturday but had to cancel the event late Thursday due to the expected cold. This critical dress rehearsal has been rescheduled for Monday, provided the weather cooperates. With only three days in February available for the mission, NASA is racing against time before the launch window shifts to March.
"Any additional delays would result in a day-for-day change," NASA stated. Heaters are being used to maintain the warmth of the Orion capsule atop the rocket, and specialized purging systems are being adapted to combat the cold. However, the crew's arrival at Kennedy Space Center in Florida remains uncertain, as Commander Reid Wiseman and his team are currently in quarantine in Houston.
NASA has a limited number of days each month to launch its first lunar crew in over half a century. The Apollo 17 mission marked the end of the iconic moon exploration program in 1972. This tight launch window and the challenges posed by the cold temperatures highlight the complexity of space exploration and the need for meticulous planning.
