Revitalizing SF: Stunning Art Installation Unveiled at Almost Empty SF Centre Mall (2026)

A dying mall, the SF Centre, is about to get a new lease of life, or at least a fresh coat of paint, thanks to an ambitious art installation. Despite its imminent closure, this mall is not going out without a fight, or at least a beautiful mural!

The Downtown Development Corporation (DDC), a nonprofit with a mission to revitalize San Francisco's downtown, has teamed up with the Institute for Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA) and the Yerba Buena Partnership to bring a stunning visual experience to the mall's Mission Street facade.

But here's where it gets controversial... This mall, once a bustling hub, is now almost empty, with its final tenants packing up. Yet, the DDC, with the support of some notable donors, including tech giants and a mysterious anonymous contributor, is investing in public art.

The mural, created by Indigenous artist Jeffrey Gibson, features stills from his video piece, 'This Burning World.' It's a powerful statement, blending modernist abstraction with Indigenous patterns, focusing on the beauty of nature.

Alison Gass, the founding director of ICA, describes it as a 'tapestry' that will bring life to a dull stretch of Mission Street.

And this is the part most people miss... This art installation is just the beginning. The DDC promises two more site-specific pieces, aiming to transform key corridors with contemporary interventions.

So, while the mall may be closing, its legacy lives on through art.

But the question remains: In a city facing challenges, is this the best use of resources? Should public funds be directed towards art, or are there more pressing issues that need addressing?
