He expressed his gratitude, stating, "If it wasn’t for you and the city of New York, we wouldn’t have been able to do what we did. You inspired us." He acknowledged the creative energy of New York City, a place that welcomed him and Isabel in 1967. It was a city that nurtured their talent and fueled their passion.
Ralph Pucci, a long-time friend and collaborator, shared insights into their relationship. "Ruben and I have been together for like 40 years," Pucci said. Their collaborations spanned mannequins, furniture, and art, including a major show in Miami. Pucci revealed Toledo's emotional reaction to receiving the Markopoulos Award, and how he dreamed of Isabel, his beloved wife, being in a jazz band. This led to a special performance by an all-female band, Chica Power, from the Jazz House Kids music school.
Linda Fargo, senior vice president of fashion and director of store presentation at Bergdorf Goodman, presented the award, praising Toledo for living at the "magical intersection of culture, art, bohemia, coolness, warmth and most of all, love." She highlighted Isabel's profound influence on Ruben's work, reflecting a love that began in their teenage years and endured for over five decades. Fargo emphasized the Toledos' significant contribution to the creative spirit, stating that Toledo embodies this spirit more than anyone else.
Toledo's career is a vibrant tapestry of achievements. He is a painter, sculptor, illustrator, fashion chronicler, critic, and designer of various items. His work has been showcased in prestigious institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Last year, his works were featured in Ralph Pucci's Miami gallery, including watercolor paintings from his "Natural Selections" series, and a mural titled "I See You — I Love You," dedicated to his late wife. He has received numerous awards and honors, including an honorary doctorate and a Fashion Group International Entrepreneur award. He is also the author of "Style Dictionary" and illustrated the Louis Vuitton City Guide for over a decade.
