The government is gearing up to address a potential surge in Year One students by significantly increasing the number of teachers nationwide. This strategic move is a direct response to the anticipated impact of the National Education Development Plan 2026-2035. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the importance of teacher preparedness, highlighting the need to mobilize resources through the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) to accommodate the expected influx of students. With the possibility of children aged six and seven entering Year One simultaneously next year, the government recognizes the critical need for additional teachers. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Education Ministry to closely examine preparations, particularly for five-year-old preschool students and six-year-olds transitioning to Year One. This comprehensive approach extends beyond funding, with the Finance Ministry instructed to expedite financial processes in line with proper procedures. Additionally, close collaboration with the Works Ministry, especially the Public Works Department, is essential for constructing new classrooms using the Industrialised Building System (IBS). Minister Fahmi also mentioned the need to place teachers on standby, as institutions like tahfiz, preparing students for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), specifically for Bahasa Malaysia and History subjects, have made such requests. Despite the focus on teacher preparedness, the government is mindful of budget considerations. While additional budget allocations may be required, the primary emphasis is on ensuring an adequate teacher-to-student ratio rather than wage adjustments. It's worth noting that teachers, along with other civil servants, received salary increases on January 22.
