Bold opening: Sunglint turns a blue ocean into a dazzling mirror, and yes, it can reveal as much as it hides. But here’s where it gets controversial: this shimmering effect is both a beautiful sight and a tricky obstacle for scientists who rely on clean satellite data to study the ocean.
Sunglint is a optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight reflects off a water surface at the same angle that a satellite sensor views it. The moment happens on the Atlantic Ocean just after sunrise, when sunlight bathed a partly cloudy sea as the International Space Station hovered about 263 miles above on March 5, 2025. The result is a near-perfect, mirror-like reflection of the sun that travels back to the satellite or astronaut, creating a striking image of gleaming water.
For remote sensing scientists, sunglint can be a headache because it can mask features that satellites usually reveal. Oceanographers who monitor ocean color and phytoplankton rely on data from space to map plankton blooms and other water properties. When sunglint contaminates imagery, the usual signals become distorted, making it harder to extract accurate information. To address this, researchers have developed several screening methods to detect and filter out sunglint-contaminated data from data archives (and they discuss these approaches in the relevant scientific literature).
Yet sunglint isn’t just a nuisance. It also opens up unique avenues for scientific observation. One practical benefit is that the surface glare can make oil on the water easier to spot. A thin film of oil tends to smooth the surface, changing its reflection properties in a way that can be used to detect both natural oil seeps and human-caused oil spills.
