The Return of the Mighty V8? Jeep's Grand Cherokee might be getting a powerful upgrade that has fans buzzing.
In a surprising move, Jeep is considering bringing back the iconic Hemi V8 engine for its beloved Grand Cherokee. This news has sparked excitement among enthusiasts, but it's also a controversial decision that could divide opinions.
Under the leadership of Stellantis, the American brands of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have faced challenges. The shift towards electric vehicles and new combustion technologies didn't sit well with loyal customers who love their V8s. However, Ram, another Stellantis brand, has already taken a bold step by reintroducing the Hemi V8 in its 1500 model, and now Jeep might follow suit.
Joe Aljajawil, the engineering lead behind the Grand Cherokee's mid-cycle refresh, hinted at this possibility in an interview with The Drive. He revealed that Jeep is listening to its customers who are clamoring for the return of the V8, leaving us all eagerly awaiting further updates.
The fifth-generation Grand Cherokee WL, introduced in 2021, initially boasted a 5.7-liter V8 engine. This powerhouse delivered an impressive 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. However, Jeep discontinued this engine option after 2023 for the two-row version and after 2024 for the three-row model.
For the 2026 refresh, Jeep introduced the new Hurricane 4 Turbo, a turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. While this engine is a reliable performer, it lacks the charm and character of the V8. Jeep also offers the trusted Pentastar V6, but only in the base model.
Motor1's Take: Some buyers simply can't be satisfied with anything less than the raw power of displacement. Jeep seems to recognize this, as hinted by their suggestion of a possible V8 comeback for the Grand Cherokee. Despite the new Hurricane 4 Turbo having twice as many cylinders as the 5.7-liter V8 and only slightly more power, it's the eight cylinders that truly matter to these enthusiasts.
So, what do you think? Should Jeep bring back the Hemi V8 for the Grand Cherokee? Or is this a step too far? We want to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
